Josep Dalmau, awarded with the Rey Jaime I prize in the Clinical Medicine category

Dr. Josep Dalmau, Professor ICREA at IDIBAPS, where he leads the clinical and experimental Neuroimmunology team, and consultant of the Neurology Department at Hospital Clínic, has been awarded the Rey Jaime I Prize in the Clinical Medicine category . Dr. Dalmau is also a professor in the Department of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona (UB). Dr. Rafael Penadés has been awarded with a Brain and Behavior Research Foundation Grant

Dr. Rafael Penadés, psychologist from the Schizophrenia Unit at Hospital Clínic and researcher at the IDIBAPS team Biological bases of psychiatric disorders and nuclear psychiatry and CIBERSAM, has been awarded with a grant from the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation within its program NARSAD Independent Investigator Grants. This foundation is one the largest private foundations in the United States dedicated to the research promotion in brain diseases such as sclerosis, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, depression and schizophrenia.

Eduard Vieta, honorary doctorate from the University of Valencia

Dr. Eduard Vieta, head of the Psychiatry and Psychology department at Hospital Clínic and head of the IDIBAPS research group Biological bases of psychiatric disorders and nuclear psychiatry, will receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Valencia (UV) as recently approved by the Governing Council of the university. Together with Dr. Vieta, Amelia Valcárcel, Paul Preston, Josep Fontana, Saskia Sassen, Josep Massot, Dale W. Jorgenson and Adriano Piattelli, will also be invested.

Dr. Vieta is also Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Barcelona and Director of the Bipolar Research Program of the Networked Biomedical Research Center on Mental Diseases (CIBERSAM). He has co-edited, together with Dr. Francesc Colom, the “Psychoeducation manual for bipolar disorder”, which was published in Chinese in 2014.

Psychoeducation is Beneficial in the Long Term in Bipolar Disorder

Dr. Eduard Vieta and Dr. Francesc Colom, second and first authors, respectively

A 6-month psychoeducational strategy achieves beneficial effects that last more than 5 years. Patients who took part in the psychoeducation sessions suffered 66% fewer episodes of mania and 75% fewer episodes of depression. This represents preventing a year of symptoms over 5 years. The cost-benefit analysis shows that the use of health care resources is far lower in these groups than in those that do not carry out the initial follow-up. Hospital Clínic de Barcelona is a pioneer both in the application of this treatment and in training professionals qualified to carry it out.
