A study opens the possibility of developing a preventive vaccine against HIV / AIDS

The HIV epidemic is the largest in the world and represents one of the most serious public health problems, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO). Only 30% of the more than 10 million patients in need have the access to the antiretroviral treatment. The total number of infected people exceeds 30 million and there are about 3 million new infections per year. The best hope for reducing the incidence of AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is a preventive vaccine.

HIV ‘prevention’ gel PRO 2000 proven ineffective

The largest international clinical trial to date into a preventative HIV gel has found no evidence that the vaginal microbicide, PRO 2000, reduces the risk of HIV infection in women, scientists announced today. This placebo-controlled trial involved 9,385 women at six research centres in four African countries and found that the risk of HIV infection in women who were supplied with PRO 2000 gel was not significantly different than in women supplied with placebo gel. Although ineffective in providing protection, PRO 2000 gel itself was safe to use.

Catalonia Joins the Fight Against Colon and Rectal Cancer

Last March 31th Hospital Clínic and Hospital del Mar did organize the workshop against colon and rectal cancer

On the occasion of Colon and Rectal Cancer (CRC) Prevention Day, held on 31 March throughout Spain, Hospital del Mar and Hospital Clínic de Barcelona jointly organized the Conference on Prevention of CRC in Catalonia, which took place at Hospital Clínic on the same day, with the presence of different people from many scientific, political and social organizations.
