Computational Simulations Suggest Multiple Sclerosis is a Single Disease

IDIBAPS researchers publish a study in the journal Plos Computational Biology that supports the idea that multiple sclerosis (MS), which has widely varying symptoms and progression in different patients, is nonetheless a single disease with common underlying mechanisms. Pablo Villoslada, Head of the IDIBAPS group Pathogenesis and new treatments in Multiple Sclerosis, has coordinated the study. Ekaterina Kotelnikova, researcher at the same group, is the first author. Josep Dalmau, awarded with the Rey Jaime I prize in the Clinical Medicine category

Dr. Josep Dalmau, Professor ICREA at IDIBAPS, where he leads the clinical and experimental Neuroimmunology team, and consultant of the Neurology Department at Hospital Clínic, has been awarded the Rey Jaime I Prize in the Clinical Medicine category . Dr. Dalmau is also a professor in the Department of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona (UB). Josep Dalmau, Chair of the new Autoimmune Neurology Section in the American Academy of Neurology

Dr. Josep Dalmau

Dr. Josep Dalmau, ICREA Professor of IDIBAPS, where he leads the Group Pathogenesis of autoimmune neuronal disorders, and consultant of the Neurology Department of Hospital Clínic, has been named Chair of the Autoimmune Neurology Section in the American Academy of Neurology (AAN). It is a newly created section that wants to differentiate itself from the classic concept of neuroimmunology, more linked to other types of diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis. Dr. Josep Dalmau named recipient of the 2016 Cotzias Lecture and Award from the American Academy of Neurology

Dr. Josep Dalmau, ICREA Research Professor at IDIBAPS, where heads the Autoimmune Pathogenesis of Neurological Diseases group, and Professor of Neurology and founder of the Penn Center for Autoimmune Neurology in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, has been honored as the recipient of the Cotzias Lecture and Award by the American Academy of Neurology. Dr. Dalmau delivered the lecture “Antibody mediated disorders of the synapse” at the Presidential Plenary Session in the organization’s 68thannual meeting taking place April 15-21 in Vancouver.

The group led by Dr. Josep Dalmau, new CIBERER incorporation

The CIBERER (Networked Biomedical Research Center for Rare Diseases) has incorporated two new research groups, among them the Pathogenesis of autoimmune neuronal disorders IDIBAPS group, led by Dr. Josep Dalmau. The other group that has joined the CIBERER is led by Dr. Vicente Vicente at the Instituto Murciano de Investigación Biosanitaria.
