IDIBAPS researchers discover a new mechanism that allows cells to take advantage of fat excess
IDIBAPS researchers have discovered the mechanism by which two cell organelles, lipid droplets (LDs) and mitochondria, interact to exchange the fatty acids that the LDs contain to mitochondria to produce energy during nutrient starvation. This is achieved thanks to special microtubules, as a kind of highway, on which LDs relocate and move up to the mitochondria. The work has been published in the journal Nature Communications and is led by Dr. Albert Pol, ICREA Professor of the Cell Compartments and Signaling IDIBAPS team and professor in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona (UB). The first authors of this paper, made in collaboration with the University of Queensland (Australia) and the University of California (USA), are Dr. Albert Herms and Dr. Marta Bosch, researchers from the IDIBAPS team.
