A new animal model to study the potential of CD6 receptor as a therapeutic target for immune-mediated diseases

IDIBAPS researchers have developed, for the first time, an animal model to study the role of the CD6 protein, a T lymphocyte molecule involved in the susceptibility for developing autoimmune diseases. It is an animal model, a mouse, that does not express this protein and that will reveal its pathophysiological role in the context of immune-mediated diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, psoriasis or rheumatoid arthritis. Dr. Francisco Lozano, head of the IDIBAPS team Immune receptors of the innate and adaptive system and Senior Consultant at the Immunology Department in Hospital Clínic, has coordinated the study published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine (JEM).

Scientists discover a new mechanism and drugs to treat autoimmune diseases

Dr. Pere Santamaria, researcher at the University of Calgary and IDIBAPS, coordinates a study published in Nature that provides a new approach to understand and treat autoimmune diseases without compromising the entire immune system. Researchers have discovered a novel cellular mechanism that regulates autoimmune response and a new class of drugs that harnesses this mechanism to treat various autoimmune diseases. The study conducted in animal models, shows for the first time that autoreactive T-cells, that protect the body against specific autoimmune diseases, can be expanded in vivo in an efficient and reproducible way.

Euroimmun acquires the rights of a patent developed by Dr. Graus and Dr. Dalmau for the diagnosis of autoimmune diseases

Dr. Graus and Dr. Dalmau have developed a technology for the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of patients with an autoimmune disease associated to sleep disorders. It is based on detecting the presence of antibodies against the neuronal protein IGLON5 by immunocytochemistry of transfected cells.

The Systemic Autoimmune Diseases research group of IDIBAPS coleads PRECISESADS, an European project to reclassify autoimmune diseases

The Systemic Autoimmune Diseases research group of IDIBAPS lead by Dr. Ricard  Cervera coleads the clinical aspect of the European project PRECISESADS, which is  planned 5-year study in 2.000 patients with various diseases: systemic lupus  erythematosus, systemic sclerosis, Sjogren’s syndrome, antiphospholipid syndrome or  mixed connective tissue disease. These diseases currently are diagnosed based on  clinical criteria relatively nonspecific often do not allow early diagnosis and, moreover,  dealt mainly with anti-inflammatory drugs and immunosuppressants also nonspecific .  The detection of new biomarkers should facilitate speed diagnosis and help in making  therapeutic decisions.

A New York Post reporter writes her experience suffering an autoimmune disease described by Dr. Josep Dalmau’s team

Brain on Fire: My Month of MadnessBrain on Fire: My Month of Madness” is the title of the memoir published by Susannah Cahalan, a young journalist from the New York Post. In this book she traces her recovery from an autoimmune disorder that masqueraded as psychosis. In 2007 the team led by Dr Josep Dalmau, first at the University of Pennsylvania and now at IDIBAPS too, presented to the world a new class of autoimmune disease involving neuronal NMDA-receptors. Thanks to that, a 24-year-old reporter was treated and recovered from an unknown disease causing her near-fatal seizures, psychosis, and a gradual loss of brain function. The Scientific American journal writes about this book and the research that made it possible.
