IDIBAPS researchers decipher how leukaemia’s genome works

A team of researchers from IDIBAPS show for the first time the complete epigenome of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, the most common type of leukaemia. The study, published in Nature Medicine, provides a high-resolution map of the functions of the genome, which steps forward into cancer molecular research. The comparison of the map for this type of leukaemia with the map of healthy cells shows hundreds of regions that change their functionality in leukaemia which help to understand the illness better and represent potential targets for the development and application of new therapies. Dr. Elías Campo, awarded with the 2016 Rey Jaime I prize in the Medical Research category

Dr. Elías Campo, Research Director at Hospital Clínic, head of the Human and experimental functional oncomorphology team at IDIBAPS and Chair at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona (UB), has been awarded with the “Rey Jaime I” award in the “medical research” category. Last Tuesday the list of winners of the 2016 edition of the awards was announced in an official ceremony held at the Palace of the Generalitat Valenciana, with the presence of the board chairman, Ximo Puig; the president of the Valencian Foundation for Advanced Studies and Vice President of the Rey Jaime I” Awards Foundation, Vicente Boluda, and the Permanent Secretary of the “Rey Jaime I” Awards, Santiago Grisolía.

The Clínic-UB Campus of the Josep Carreras Research Institute has been inaugurated

Last September 5th, the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona hosted the opening ceremony of the laboratories and facilities of the Clinic-UB Campus of the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute with the aim of achieving that leukaemia become, one day, 100% curable.

The José Carreras Research Institute against Leukaemia is born

This morning, the meeting to constitute the new José Carreras Research Institute against Leukaemia took place. The main aims of the new Institute are to promote the biomedical research of hematological malignancies, especially leukaemia, and also to develop preventative and personalized medicines in the same field. The meeting was attended by Mr. José Carreras in his role as president of the private International Foundation that took his name. In addition, he was joined by ministers, Marina Geli and Josep Huguet, the rector of the UAB, Ana Ripoll, the rector of the UB, Dídac Ramírez and the mayor of Badalona Jordi Sierra.

Five Cord Blood Transplant Centers in Catalonia and Valencia Join a Study to Test a New Technique to Treat Leukemia and Lymphoma

The Gamida Cell-Teva Joint Venture announced today that five prestigious cord blood transplantations centers in Spain, three in Barcelona and two in Valencia, have joined the ExCell study.
