Stents, a good alternative for patients who until now had surgery as their only option

The New England Journal of Medicine has reported a study showing that some patients with coronary artery disease treated with stents coated with everolimus get the same three year survival than those undergoing bypass. In particular, it is people who suffer mild or moderate disease located in the left main coronary artery. Two researchers from the Clinic are authors of the study: Dr. Manel Sabaté, head of the Cardiology Department, who has also been the spanish coordinator, and Dr. José Luis Pomar, cardiac surgeon at the same hospital. Hospital Clínic introduces a less invasive therapy for heart failure patients

Hospital Clínic of Barcelona has been the first hospital in Spain in using the novel surgical procedure known as Less Invasive Ventricular Enhancement (LIVE). This therapy consists in reducing the size of the left ventricle –the main pumping chamber of the heart- after a heart failure in a less invasive way, thanks to the REVIVENT myocardial anchoring system. Dr. Manuel Castellà, chief of Cardiac Surgery at the Hospital Clinic and Dr. Daniel Pereda, heart surgeon at the same service, used this innovative procedure with two patients who achieved a better clinical outcome with an enhanced quality of life.

Experts from Hospital Clínic – IDIBAPS and Bayer discuss with journalists and patients about a rare pulmonary hypertension

Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is a rare, progressive and life-threatening disease. The Hospital Clínic of Barcelona is a reference center in Spain for the treatment of this disease. Dr. Joan Albert Barberà, from the Pneumology Service, Dr. Marta Burrel, from the Radiology Service, and the surgeons Dr. José Luis Pomar and Dr. Manuel Castellà, offered a deep insight into the disease in an event held at the IDIBAPS’ CEK building. Two patients explained their first hand experience after undergoing a complex operation called pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA). Dr. Hossein-A. Ghofrani and Dr. Johannes-Peter Stasch presented new therapeutic options for inoperable patients developed by Bayer Pharma AG. The results discussed today were presented during the European Respiratory Society (ERS) Congress taking place in Barcelona.
