Drs. Bruix and Gracia-Sancho, awarded by the EASL for their research on liver diseases

Dr. Jordi Gracia-Sancho, researcher from the Hepatic hemodynamics and portal hypertension IDIBAPS team and from CIBERehd, and Dr. Jordi Bruix, head of the Hepatic Oncology Unit of Hospital Clínic and IDIBAPS and scientific director of CIBERehd, will be awarded by the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) in recognition of their scientific career. Dr. Gracia-Sancho has been awarded with the Young Investigator Award in Hepatology 2016 and Dr. Bruix receives the recognition for his entire scientific career. The awards will be presented in the framework of the International Liver Congress, organized by the EASL and held between 13 and 17 April in Barcelona. These awards are a prestigious recognition to the research carried out to date by both researchers in the field of liver diseases.

Four researchers at Hospital Clínic and IDIBAPS among the 2015 most cited scientists

Dr. Jordi Bruix, Head of the hepatic Oncology Unit at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, the Hepatic Oncology IDIBAPS research team, the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) and scientific director of CIBEREHD; Dr. Josep Dalmau, ICREA Professor and Head of the Pathogenesis of autoimmune neuronal disorders IDIBAPS research group; Dr. Josep Maria Llovet, ICREA Professor, Head of the Translational research in hepatic oncology research group at IDIBAPS and Director of Mount Sinai Liver Cancer Program at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (New York); and Dr. Eduard Vieta, head of the Psychiatry and Psychology Department at Hospital Clínic and leader of Bipolar Disorders team at IDIBAPS, are among the most influential names in science and appear in the Highly Cited Researchers 2015 list published by Thomson Reuters.

Scientists in Barcelona discover a potential treatment for cirrhosis

Scientists headed by Raúl Méndez, ICREA research professor at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), and Mercedes Fernández, at IDIBAPS in Barcelona, reveal that the inhibition of CPEB4 protein may prevent the development of the abnormal blood vessels associated with cirrhosis. Pathological angiogenesis is one of the most serious complications in patients with cirrhosis and a key factor in the development and worsening of the disease. Consequently, many research efforts focus on identifying treatments for this condition. The results of the study have been published in the most recent issue of Gastroenterology.

Dr. Jordi Bruix, new Scientific Director of the Networked Biomedical Research Center for Hepatic and Digestive Diseases

Dr. Jordi Bruix, group leader of the Networked Biomedical Research Center for Hepatic and Digestive Diseases (CIBEREHD) at Hospital Clínic and IDIBAPS, has been appointed CIBEREHD Scientific Director on the CIBER Standing Committee (dependent on the Carlos III Health Institute) held this morning. Dr. Bruix succeeds Dr. Jaume Bosch, also from the Hospital Clinic of  and the IDIBAPS, who occupied this position since 2006.

Five researchers from IDIBAPS among the most cited scientists

Thomson Reuters has published the list of the Highly Cited Researchers, a compilation of the most influential names in science. 50 Spanish researchers from different broad fields of sciences and social sciences appear on the list. In the field of Clinical Medicine, four of the seven Spanish investigators listed are researchers from IDIBAPS. The health research institute associated to Hospital Clínic and Universitat de Barcelona  also has the only Spanish researcher in Psychiatry.

Dr. Jordi Bruix received the prestigious Golden Award Medal of the Canadian Association for the Study of the Liver

Dr. Jordi Bruix , Hepatology Senior Consultant, Head of Oncology Liver Unit of Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Head of Hepatic Oncology team at August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS)  and Deputy Scientific  at Networked Biomedical Research Center Hepatic and Digestive Diseases (CIBEREHD), received last February 9 the prestigious Golden Medal Award from the Canadian Association for the Study of the Liver, granted recognition for significant contributions to advances in the field of hepatology, especially liver cancer. Dr. Bruix received this award in the context of the Canadian Digestive Disease Week held in Toronto, where he gave his lecture Hepatocellular carcinoma. Past, present and future.
