A Computational Analysis Identifies a New Clinical Phenotype of Severe Malaria

There are more clinical phenotypes of severe malaria than those defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), according to a study led by ISGlobal, an institution supported by “la Caixa” Foundation. Malaria resurgence can have adverse clinical impacts on pregnant women

A study published by the New England Journal of Medicine and led by ISGlobal and the Manhiça Health Research Center (CISM) in Mozambique, shows that a reduction in the exposure to the malaria parasite can weaken the immune regulation of parasite density and increase the occurrence of adverse clinical outcomes among pregnant women that become infected, as well as their newborns.

The Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), organization participated by Hospital Clínic, has launched an online job bank to help global health organisations and speed up the response to health emergencies. The job bank, which will put specialised workers in contact with global health organisations working in the field, is now fully operational and available at the web.

Pedro Alonso, New Director of the WHO’s Global Malaria Programme

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has appointed Dr. Pedro Alonso as director of its Global Malaria Programme. Dr Alonso is currently director of the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), Head of the International Health and Tropical Medicine Unit at the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona, and Professor at the University of Barcelona. He will take up his position at the WHO headquarters in Geneva in October. This appointment to one of the most important posts at the UN health agency is recognition of his work in the field of global health through ISGlobal.
