IDIBAPS and IrsiCaixa participate in a 23 million euro project to develop HIV vaccine

IDIBAPS and the IrsiCaixa AIDS Research Institute participate in the European AIDS Vaccine Initiative (EAVI2020), a project to to accelerate the search for an effective HIV vaccine. This initiative, that is part of the European Comission framework programme for research and innovation (Horizon2020), brings together leading HIV researchers from public organisations and biotech companies from across Europe, Australia, Canada and the USA. IrsiCaixa and IDIBAPS are members of this consortium in which participate 22 institutions. Dr. Joan Joseph, researcher at the Infectious Diseases and AIDS IDIBAPS team led by Dr. Josep M. Gatell, will coordinate the project conducted at IDIBAPS over the next 5 years. At IrsiCaixa, an institute led by Dr. Bonaventura Clotet, this project will be coordinated by Dr. Christian Brander, head of the Host Cellullar and Genetic Immunity group and member of the consortium’s steering comitee. The other spanish participant in the consortium is the Instituto de Salud Carlos III.

IDIBAPS participates in a 5.7M European project to improve knowledge on liver cancer

The Translational Reserarch in Hepatic Oncology IDIBAPS group, led by Dr. Josep M. Llovet, in collaboration with Dr. Roser Pinyol and 8 more researchers, participates in a European project to identify the molecular mechanisms that have a direct impact on the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The HEP-CAR project will evaluate the role of these mechanisms in different liver diseases leading to HCC -the infection by hepatitis B and C, overweight or alcohol-. This research initiative, coordinated by the University of Freiburg and in which ten European academic centers are involved, is part of Horizon 2020, the European Comission framework programme for research and innovation, and it is endowed with a budget of 5.7 million euros, one of them corresponding to IDIBAPS.

Hospital Clinic will coordinate the validation of an european ‘app’ to better monitor HIV patients

Researchers from the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona participate in the development and subsequent validation of an application for mobile devices that will facilitate monitoring of HIV patients and the doctor-patient communication. In the European project EmERGE, Hospital Clinic will validate the use of a mHealth platform in a study with 4,000 patients across Europe, 1.000 of whom will be participants of this center. The project, launched last May 6th and coordinated by the University of Sussex (UK), is part of Horizon 2020, the European Comission framework programme for research and innovation, it is endowed with a budget of 6 million euros and includes the participation of several European institutions.

IDIBAPS hosts the conference “Strategy in Horizon 2020- Social Challenge 1: Health, demographic change and well-being”

On Monday June 8, nearly 100 representatives of companies, research institutions, hospitals, universities and health sector administrations attended the conference Horizon 2020 Strategy – Health; Reto Social 1 “Health, Demographic Change and wellness”.  With the aim to discuss about the strategy and the current and future and positioning around the Social Challenge 1in the Horizon 2020 programme, there were also presented other funding opportunities under the same programme for Health sector entities or other related institutions. The Centre for theDevelopment of Industrial Technology (CDTI), IDIBAPS together with both ACCIO and AGAUR from the Catalan Government, organizedtheconferencewithin the framework  of the Health Connect-EU Group.

Hospital Clínic participates in a European project for the prevention and treatment of atrial fibrillation

On May 21st the European consortium CATCH ME (Characterizing Atrial fibrillation by Translating into STI Health Causes Modifiers in the Elderly) was launched at the office of the European Society of Cardiology in Brussels. The aim of this project is to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of patients with atrial fibrillation and its complications. Dr. Lluís Mont, coordinator of Atrial Fibrillation Unit of the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, participates in this project, coordinated by the University of Birmingham (UK). Horizon 2020, which is the largest EU research and innovation programme, supports the consortium with a 5 Mio Euro grant over the consortium’s duration of 4 years.

IDIBAPS is the Spanish entity with more activities funded by the Innovative Medicines Initiative

The report named “Spanish Participation in the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI)” has been recently published by the Center for Industrial Technological Development (CDTI). This report lists the main indicators of participation in 8 of the 11 IMI’s calls supported under the 7th Framework Programme.
