IDIBAPS hosts the annual meeting of the European AIDS Vaccine Initiative (EAVI2020)

At the beginning of November, scientists from 22 institutions in Europe, Australia, Canada and the United States, which are part of the European AIDS Vaccine Initiative 2020 (EAVI2020), met in Barcelona to analyze the latest advances in the development of an effective vaccine against HIV within the framework of the European Research and Development Program Horizon 2020. The three Spanish centers participating in this consortium are the IDIBAPS, organizer of the meeting, the IrsiCaixa AIDS Research Institute and the Institute of Health Carlos III. In the context of the meeting a photo exhibition entitled “The development of an HIV vaccine in photos” was presented, with the aim of sharing the scientific advances at the community level. Hospital Clinic-IDIBAPS leads a European project to fight against cirrhosis within the Horizon 2020 program

Hospital Clínic-IDIBAPS is leading a European project to evaluate the efficacy of treatment with the combination of rifaximin, an antibiotic that modulates the intestinal microbiome, and statins in patients with advanced cirrhosis. The project, called LIVERHOPE, will also focuse on the search for biomarkers of the disease. LIVERHOPE is coordinated by Dr. Pere Ginès, head of the Hepatology Department of the Hospital Clínic and of the team of Mechanisms of liver diseases and complications of cirrhosis of IDIBAPS, and a total of 16 institutions are participating among clinical centers, universities and European companies. This project is part of the Horizon 2020 European research and innovation framework program and it is endowed with a budget of 6 million euros.

IDIBAPS is the Spanish biomedical center that has received more funds from Horizon 2020 in 2015

The European Commission has published the Horizon 2020 Monitoring report for 2015. This document includes, among others, the 50 institutions that have received the most funding for research in the calls made up to 2015.

Innovative technology for thyroid cancer screening

IDIBAPS participates in the EU-funded project LUCA (Laser and Ultrasound Co-analyzer for Thyroid Nodules) that aims to develop a new, low-cost technology for the screening of thyroid cancer. The novel device will provide doctors with enhanced information required to provide better and more specific results in thyroid nodule screening and enable better diagnosis.

IDIBAPS takes part in a 30 million euros project to develop new HIV vaccines

IDIBAPS takes part in the European HIV Vaccine Alliance (EHVA) to develop and evaluate new preventive and therapeutic vaccines. The European Commission grants with over 22 million euros in addition to the 6 million euros from Swiss Government. This effort is part of the European Commission Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (Horizon2020) and gathers together HIV leading scientists from 39 public institutions along with European, North American and African companies. Dr. Josep M. Gatell, head of the Infectious Diseases and AIDS IDIBAPS team, is the coordinator from this centre, and Drs. Felipe García, Montserrat Plana and Eloisa Yuste, researchers from the same group, also would join the project. The Spanish National Centre for Biotechnology of the CSIC (CNB-CSIC) also participates.

IDIBAPS and FCRB among the Spanish institutions with more funds under the H2020 Health Social Challenge

In early October, the Centre for the Industrial and Technological Development (CDTI) released the 2014 provisional results about the Spanish participation in Horizon 2020 (H2020) under the Social Challenge 1: “Health, Demographic Change and wellness“. During 2014, IDIBAPS and FCRB were granted a total of 7 projects and a total funding of 3.061.398 euros.
