A non-invasive method allows detecting a high frequency of undiagnosed chronic liver disease

Researchers at Hospital Clínic and IDIBAPS in collaboration with the USR Metropolitana Nord-IDIAP Jordi Gol, from the Catalan Institute of Health, have carried out a study to determine the frequency of chronic liver disease in the general population who show no signs of disease. They evaluated more than 3,000 people of whom about 4% had an undiagnosed advanced liver disease and at high risk of developing cirrhosis or liver cancer. The study was performed using the elastography, a non-invasive technique to measure liver fibrosis. Read the rest of this entry »

A treatment increases survival by 50% in mice with Niemann-Pick type C, a rare disease that affects brain and liver

Researchers from the IIBB-CSIC and the IDIBAPS publish an article in the journal Redox Biology in which they propose an alternative treatment for Niemann-Pick disease type C, a rare lysosomal pathology that causes neurodegeneration and impaired liver function. With a compound that crosses the blood-brain barrier, it is possible to increase the survival of the mice by 50% and to improve the neurological and motor problems related to the disease. Dr. José C. Fernández-Checa, head of the IDIBAPS team on Mitochondrial regulation of cell death and steatohepatitis, and Dr. Carmen García-Ruiz, from the same team, are the coordinators of the study, which has been carried out in collaboration with researchers from France and Chile. The first author of the study is Sandra Torres, predoctoral researcher in Dr. Fernández-Checa’s lab.

Drs. Bruix and Gracia-Sancho, awarded by the EASL for their research on liver diseases

Dr. Jordi Gracia-Sancho, researcher from the Hepatic hemodynamics and portal hypertension IDIBAPS team and from CIBERehd, and Dr. Jordi Bruix, head of the Hepatic Oncology Unit of Hospital Clínic and IDIBAPS and scientific director of CIBERehd, will be awarded by the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) in recognition of their scientific career. Dr. Gracia-Sancho has been awarded with the Young Investigator Award in Hepatology 2016 and Dr. Bruix receives the recognition for his entire scientific career. The awards will be presented in the framework of the International Liver Congress, organized by the EASL and held between 13 and 17 April in Barcelona. These awards are a prestigious recognition to the research carried out to date by both researchers in the field of liver diseases.

A nutritional combination of saturated fatty acids can induce steatohepatitis

Researchers from the IIBB-CSIC and IDIBAPS have published an article in Oncotarget journal in which they have shown for the first time that diets enriched in two types of saturated fatty acids – palmitic and myristic – induce the development of steatohepatitis, an advanced stage of the fatty liver disease, and promotes fat to accumulate in the liver which causes inflammation. The coordinators of this study are Dr. Jose C. Fernández-Checa, Head of the Mitochondrial Regulation of Cell Death and Steatohepatitis IDIBAPS team, and Dr. Carmen García-Ruiz, researcher at the same team. Dr. Laura Martinez, post-doctoral researcher at Dr. Fernández-Checa’s group, is the first author of the study.

Researchers from IDIBAPS and Hospital Clínic awarded for the best communication on basic Gastroenterology at the SEPD Congress

A study conducted by researchers from IDIBAPS and Hospital Clinic of Barcelona has received the Arias Vallejo prize for the best communication in Basic Gastroenterology presented at the LXXIV Annual Congress of the Spanish Society of Digestive Pathology (SEPD). This prize is awarded by the Digestive System Spanish Foundation (FEAD). Sergi Guixé-Muntet and Dr. Jordi Gracia-Sancho, researchers at the Liver hemodynamics and portal hypertension IDIBAPS team, are the first and last authors, respectively. Doctors Sergi Vila, Carmen Peralta, Juan Carlos Garcia-Pagan and Jaume Bosch have also participated in the study entitled “Role of autophagy in endothelial hepatic ischemia and reperfusion”.

A mutation in progenitor cells identified as origin and therapeutic target for cholangiocarcinoma

In recent years, cancer research has been focused on the identification of mutations in genes involved in tumor development. Nevertheless, the molecular pathways that contribute to the progression of the disease remain quite unknown. The journal Nature publishes a paper in which an international team of scientists, led by Nabeel Bardesy, PhD, from the Harvard Medical School, suggests that a mutation in the IDH enzyme (isocitrate dehydrogenase), that occurs in liver progenitor cells, promotes the progression of cholangiocarcinoma, a type of liver cancer. Josep M. Llovet, MD, PhD, ICREA Research Professor at the HCC Translational Research Lab of the Liver Unit at IDIBAPS and Director of Mount Sinai Liver Cancer Program at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (New York) has collaborated in the study together with Daniela Sia, PhD, and Helena Cornellà, members of the same research group.
