Hospital Clínic and IDIBAPS researchers participate in the new European clinical guidelines for the management of hepatocellular carcinoma

Two researchers from the Hepatic Oncology Unit at Hospital Clínic-IDIBAPS have participated in the development of the new clinical practice guidelines for the management of hepatocellular carcinoma developed by the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL). It is a consensus document that marks the road map in the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of this type of cancer, which accounts for 90% of primary liver tumors. Read the rest of this entry »

Dr. Gracia-Sancho receives a grant from the Gilead Sciences Research Scholars Program

Dr. Jordi Gracia-Sancho has obtained a grant from the Gilead Sciences Research Scholars Program. The program provides financial support to the institutions of 3 young researchers to develop a two-year research project in the field of liver disease. Each award is funded up to USD130,000. Dr. Gracia-Sancho officially received the grant on April 15th in the framework of European Hepatology Congress, organized by the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL).

Drs. Bruix and Gracia-Sancho, awarded by the EASL for their research on liver diseases

Dr. Jordi Gracia-Sancho, researcher from the Hepatic hemodynamics and portal hypertension IDIBAPS team and from CIBERehd, and Dr. Jordi Bruix, head of the Hepatic Oncology Unit of Hospital Clínic and IDIBAPS and scientific director of CIBERehd, will be awarded by the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) in recognition of their scientific career. Dr. Gracia-Sancho has been awarded with the Young Investigator Award in Hepatology 2016 and Dr. Bruix receives the recognition for his entire scientific career. The awards will be presented in the framework of the International Liver Congress, organized by the EASL and held between 13 and 17 April in Barcelona. These awards are a prestigious recognition to the research carried out to date by both researchers in the field of liver diseases.

The list of 20 most cited articles published in the Journal of Hepatology include 4 documents by IDIBAPS – Hospital Clínic investigators

The Journal of Hepatology is the official journal of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL), and a key resource in the specialty. With each issue this Journal publishes original papers, reviews, case reports and letters to the Editor concerned with clinical and basic research in the field of hepatology. Recently it presented the most cited articles since 2008, and 4 of the 20 selected documents are signed by IDIBAPS – Hospital Clínic of Barcelona investigators. This fact underlines the leading international role of the Hepatology Service at the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona and the IDIBAPS teams at the Liver, digestive system and metabolism Area.

CLIF Consortium describes a new syndrome in patients with acute decompensation of cirrhosis

Chronic liver failure is among the top ten causes of death in adults in many countries and constitutes the most common reason for hospital admission amongst all patients with liver diseases. The shortage of liver donors urges the scientific community to design effective treatments for chronic liver failure to improve quality of life and survival in these patients. The EASL-CLIF (European Association for the Study of the Liver – Chronic Liver Failure) consortium is a multicenter organization, coordinated from IDIBAPS – Hospital Clínic of Barcelona by the team led by Dr. Vicente Arroyo and Dr. Pere Ginés, specifically aimed at promoting research projects on Chronic Liver Failure. Recently this Consortium published an article in Gastroenterology, with Dr. Richard Moreau from Hôpital Beaujon (Paris, France) as its first author, describing acute-on-chronic liver failure as a distinct syndrome that develops in patients with acute decompensation of cirrhosis.

Dr. Joan Carles García-Pagán co-organized the first EASL meeting on Budd-Chiari syndrome, idiopathic portal hypertension and portal vein thrombosis

At the end of June a monothematic conference on liver vascular diseases was held in Tallinn (Estonia), sponsored by the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL). Dr. Joan Carles García-Pagán, a researcher from Hospital Clínic – IDIBAPS – CIBERehd, was the co-organizer of the event on behalf of the EASL. Discussions during the conference were mostly focused on 3 rare liver diseases: Budd-Chiari syndrome, idiopathic portal hypertension and portal vein thrombosis.
