Gisela Sugranyes, awarded by the European Society of Psychiatry

Gisela Sugranyes, head of the research group on Multimodal neuroimaging in high risk and early psychosis at IDIBAPS, psychiatrist at Hospital Clinic and researcher of CIBERSAM, has received a “Research Award” by the European Society of Psychiatry (EPA) in the category of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She has received the award for her study entitled “Clinical, Cognitive, and Neuroimaging Evidence of a Neurodevelopmental Continuum in Offspring of Probands With Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder” and published in the journal Schizophrenia Bulletin. Eduard Vieta, conferred and honorary doctorate by the University of Valencia (UV)

Dr. Eduard Vieta, head of the Psychiatry and Psychology Department at Hospital Clínic and head of the IDIBAPS research group Biological bases of psychiatric disorders and nuclear psychiatry, received on June 17th an honorary doctorate by the University of Valencia (UV), in a solemn session in the Auditorium of the educational institution. The session was attended by the secretaries from the Generalitat Valenciana Josep Joan Vidal (Education) and Ricardo Campos (Public Health), as well as a broad representation of the university community.

Dr. Rafael Penadés has been awarded with a Brain and Behavior Research Foundation Grant

Dr. Rafael Penadés, psychologist from the Schizophrenia Unit at Hospital Clínic and researcher at the IDIBAPS team Biological bases of psychiatric disorders and nuclear psychiatry and CIBERSAM, has been awarded with a grant from the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation within its program NARSAD Independent Investigator Grants. This foundation is one the largest private foundations in the United States dedicated to the research promotion in brain diseases such as sclerosis, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, depression and schizophrenia.

Functional remediation improves autonomy and overall functioning of patients with bipolar disorder

According to a study published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, patients with bipolar disorder who have followed a functional remediation program show better overall performance and a greater autonomy. The study has been coordinated by Dr. Eduard Vieta, Head of the Psychiatry Department at Hospital Clinic and head of the Research Group on Bipolar Disorder at IDIBAPS. There have participated 10 groups of the Networked Biomedical Research Center on Mental Diseases (CIBERSAM).

New pharmacological strategy to treat depression in a faster and more effective way

A study led by researchers at the Biomedical Research Institute of Barcelona CSIC (IIBB-CSIC) and the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS), shows that it is possible to treat depression in a faster and more effective way with inhibitory oligonucleotides directed towards a specific type of neurons rather than with conventional drugs. These oligonucleotides, formed by a short sequence of RNA molecules, block the serotonin transporter transcription, the therapeutic target of other antidepressants.

AB-Biotics acquires a patent for predicting antipsychotic-induced extrapyramidal symptoms

The Catalan biotech company AB-Biotics has acquired the rights to a patent of a technology developed by Universitat de Barcelona (UB), IDIBAPS, Hospital Clínic de Barcelona and CIBERSAM (Consorcio Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Salud Mental). The patented method allows to predict the high or low risk of a patient treated with antipsychotic drugs developing extrapyramidal symptoms. The patent inventors are Amalia Lafuente Flo, Sergi Mas Herrero and Cristina Magdalena Grau from UB; Patricia Gassò Astorga from IDIBAPS and UB; and, Miguel Bernardo Arroyo from Hospital Clínic, UB and CIBERSAM. The project has been managed from the Fundació Clínic Innovation Department.
