Sleep apnea could favour tumor growth at young ages

A scientific study led by researchers at Hospital Clínic-IDIBAPS, the University of Barcelona and the CIBERES, conducted with animal models, states that sleep apnea can favour lung cancer growth in young individuals. Dr. Alvar Agustí, has been elected president of the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disesase (GOLD) a global consensus about the strategy for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Dr. Agustí is Director of the Institute Clínic Respiratory at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Head of the Inflammation and repair in respiratory illnesses IDIBAPS team, member of the Networked Biomedical Research Center for Respiratory Diseases (CIBERES) and president and founder of the Barcelona Respiratory Network (BRN).

An initial combined treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension provides better long-term results

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) shows that the combination of two drugs (ambrisentan and tadalafil) is more effective than the use of one of these agents to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension. The combination therapy improves very significantly the outcome of patients with this disease and reduces by 50% the risk of clinical failure. Dr. Joan Albert Barberà, pulmonologist at Hospital Clínic and head of the IDIBAPS team Physiopathological mechanisms of respiratory illnesses is one of the authors of this study and coordinator of the trial in Spain.

Dr. Barberà, coordinator of the new CIBERES research program in pulmonary hypertension

Dr. Joan Albert Barberà coordinates the Corporate Research Program (CRP) on pulmonary hypertension that has launched the Networked Biomedical Research Center for Respiratory Diseases (CIBERES). The program’s main goal is to identify markers that will help in the diagnosis and to find new therapeutic targets for this disease. Dr. Barbera is pneumologist at Hospital Clínic, leader of the IDIBAPS team Pathophysiological Mechanisms of Respiratory Ilnesses and researcher at CIBERES.

Dr. Antoni Torres Takes Part in Awarding Lilly Foundation 2009 Prizes for Biomedical Research

Doctor Manel Esteller, director of the Cancer Epigenetics and Biology Program at the Bellvitge Institute for Biomedical Research, and Dr. Andrès Esteban de la Torre, head of the intensive care department of Getafe University Hospital and head of one of the CIBER groups on Respiratory Disease (CIBERES), have been awarded the 2009 Biomedical Research Awards in the categories of preclinical and clinical biomedical research, respectively. The award ceremony, which was first held in 2002, was presided over by the Minister for Science and Innovation, Cristina Garmendia.

Doctor Antoni Torres, head of the respiratory medicine department of Hospital Clínic, Barcelona, an IDIBAPS group and CIBERES, attended the event on 6 May as a 2007 winner and presented the scientific results obtained with the help of the Lilly grant money. The Minister for Science and Innovation stated that the new government plans will encourage biomedical research in public hospitals, particularly translational research with repercussions for the treatment and outcome of patients.
