Hospital Clínic and IDIBAPS researchers participate in the new European clinical guidelines for the management of hepatocellular carcinoma

Two researchers from the Hepatic Oncology Unit at Hospital Clínic-IDIBAPS have participated in the development of the new clinical practice guidelines for the management of hepatocellular carcinoma developed by the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL). It is a consensus document that marks the road map in the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of this type of cancer, which accounts for 90% of primary liver tumors. Read the rest of this entry »

Researchers discover a protein that protects against fatty liver, the most common hepatic disease in Western countries

A team co-headed by scientists at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) and the IDIBAPS Biomedical Research Institute (part of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona) has revealed the capacity of the CPEB4 protein to prevent fatty liver disease. This condition generally leads to chronic inflammation (non-alcoholic steatohepatitis), which can trigger fibrosis, cirrhosis and ultimately liver cancer. This study on the basic biology of the liver paves the way to examine therapeutic strategies to fight and prevent fatty liver disease. The results have appeared in Nature Cell Biology this week.

Drs. Bruix and Gracia-Sancho, awarded by the EASL for their research on liver diseases

Dr. Jordi Gracia-Sancho, researcher from the Hepatic hemodynamics and portal hypertension IDIBAPS team and from CIBERehd, and Dr. Jordi Bruix, head of the Hepatic Oncology Unit of Hospital Clínic and IDIBAPS and scientific director of CIBERehd, will be awarded by the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) in recognition of their scientific career. Dr. Gracia-Sancho has been awarded with the Young Investigator Award in Hepatology 2016 and Dr. Bruix receives the recognition for his entire scientific career. The awards will be presented in the framework of the International Liver Congress, organized by the EASL and held between 13 and 17 April in Barcelona. These awards are a prestigious recognition to the research carried out to date by both researchers in the field of liver diseases.

Dr. Jordi Bruix, new Scientific Director of the Networked Biomedical Research Center for Hepatic and Digestive Diseases

Dr. Jordi Bruix, group leader of the Networked Biomedical Research Center for Hepatic and Digestive Diseases (CIBEREHD) at Hospital Clínic and IDIBAPS, has been appointed CIBEREHD Scientific Director on the CIBER Standing Committee (dependent on the Carlos III Health Institute) held this morning. Dr. Bruix succeeds Dr. Jaume Bosch, also from the Hospital Clinic of  and the IDIBAPS, who occupied this position since 2006.

Dr. Jordi Bruix received the prestigious Golden Award Medal of the Canadian Association for the Study of the Liver

Dr. Jordi Bruix , Hepatology Senior Consultant, Head of Oncology Liver Unit of Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Head of Hepatic Oncology team at August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS)  and Deputy Scientific  at Networked Biomedical Research Center Hepatic and Digestive Diseases (CIBEREHD), received last February 9 the prestigious Golden Medal Award from the Canadian Association for the Study of the Liver, granted recognition for significant contributions to advances in the field of hepatology, especially liver cancer. Dr. Bruix received this award in the context of the Canadian Digestive Disease Week held in Toronto, where he gave his lecture Hepatocellular carcinoma. Past, present and future.

The Translational Research Group on Liver Cancer Receives the AACR INNOVATOR Award

Dr. Josep Maria Llovet The American Association of Cancer Research has awarded Dr. Josep Maria Llovet of the IDIBAPS Liver Cancer team with the 2009 Landon Foundation – AACR INNOVATOR Award for International Collaboration in Cancer Research. This prestigious award provides funding for large lines of collaborative research in cancer.

The translational research group led by Dr. Llovet is a paradigm of collaboration in network, as it takes part in many initiatives, such as the CIBER on Liver and Digestive Diseases (CIBERehd) and the HCC Genomic Project international consortium. Dr. Llovet himself combines his responsibilities as professor of ICREA research at the IDIBAPS and as director of the HCC Research Program at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.
