An IDIBAPS-Clínic study shows for the first time the benefits of the Google-Pubmed “big data” in systemic autoimmune diseases geoepidemiology

The big data is changing the landscape of scientific research, also in medicine, where in areas such as epidemiology and genetics allows analyzing total or almost total populations in studies that can be relatively basic (determine the impact of a specific disease in a population) or very complex (analyzing the effectiveness of new drugs on a whole population or large-scale genetic research).

Now a geoepidemiologic autoimmune study conducted on 394.827 patients with systemic autoimmune diseases (SAD) led by the Systemic Autoimmune Diseases IDIBAPS team, the Transverse Group for research in Primary Care from IDIBAPS and CAPSBE, and the Hospital Clínic, in co-operation with Tel Aviv University, King’s College University of London and the Harvard Medical School in Boston, shows the results of a massive data search using Google and Pubmed in combination, and the benefits that can be obtained for medical research on systemic autoimmune diseases (SAD). The study is available online in the journal Autoimmunity Reviews.

An UB research shows that cholesterol plays a key role in cell migration

From left to right, researchers Carles Enrich, Meritxell Reverter, Anna Álvarez Guaita, Ana García Melero, Carles Rentero and Elsa Meneses, at the Faculty of Medicine of UB.

A group of researchers led by professor Carles Enrich, Chief of  IDIBAPS‘ Endocytosis and Protein Intracellular Transit team and member of Cellular Biology, Immunology and Neurosciences UB Dept., have found that cholesterol plays a key role in cell mobility and tissue invasion. The results of the study prove that the accumulation of LDL cholesterol cells —the one carried by low-density lipoproteins— may play a crucial role in promoting cell mobility. On the contrary, high levels of HDL cholesterol —the one carried by high-density lipoproteins— may avoid cell propagation. This is a key study to better understand cancer metastasis, the process in which cancer cells invade healthy tissues, and foster the discussion on the relationship between cholesterol levels and cancer incidence. The paper is published in open access Cell Reports.

IDIBAPS continues to grow with the CELLEX Biomedical Research Centre

The CELLEX Biomedical Research Center has been presented, a new space where professionals from the Institut d’Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS) will continue to develop their full potential. The new center has five floors equipped for last generation biomedical research located in the south wing of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona (Casanova, 143). During the presentation the facilities were visited by the Minister of Economy and Knowledge of the Catalan Government (Generalitat de Catalunya), Andreu Mas-Colell, the Minister of Health of the Catalan Government, Boi Ruiz, the director of the UB Dídac Ramirez, the president of the private foundation CELLEX, Pere Mir, and the Vice President for Research, Innovation and Transfer of UB, Jordi Alberch, accompanied by the Director of IDIBAPS, Ramon Gomis, and other authorities. The inauguration ended with an academic session.
