Hospital Clínic makes a commitment to the molecular diagnostic of solid tumors in clinical practice

Hospital Clínic de Barcelona goes one step forward in the molecular diagnosis of solid tumors with a single test that detects multiple mutations within 22 genes in patients with advanced lung cancer, melanoma and colorectal cancer. The implementation of this genetic test based on massive parallel sequencing technologies allows shortening the time of diagnosis and personalizing the treatment for each patient. With this test, the Medical Oncology department at Hospital Clínic, together with the Biomedical Diagnostic Center (CDB), positions at the forefront of the clinical application of this diagnostic tool in the Spanish public health system, because of the technology used and the number of genes and tumors analyzed.

A study defines the risk of colon cancer in patients with serrated polyposis

A study led by researchers from Hospital Clínic and IDIBAPS defines more precisely the risk of developing colon cancer in patients with serrated polyposis, a syndrome in which colorectal polyps have a characteristic gear morphology. In a study published in the journal Gut, researchers have confirmed that this syndrome predisposes to colon cancer but with a lower risk than the previously published. Dr. Francesc Balaguer, head of the High Risk Colorectal Cancer Unit at Hospital Clínic of Barcelona and researcher at the Gastrointestinal and pancreatic oncology IDIBAPS team, has coordinated this study. The first author of the paper is Dr. Sabela Carballal, specialist at the Gastroenterology Department at Hospital Clinic.

A multimedia application for schools to learn about biomedicine and how does a laboratory work

Laboratori Virtual

Multimedia applications are an ideal tool to stimulate learning and explaining complex concepts. That is the reason Institut d’Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS), the biomedical research center linked to the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona, the University of Barcelona and the CSIC, joined efforts with Ambientech, an institution specialized in educational portals. The result is a virtual laboratory designed to become an educational support in the classrooms, which explains scientific concepts and explains everyday activity in clinical and basic laboratories. This activity, which was started with a grant from the Generalitat de Catalunya (ACDC 2010) and had the support of the Obra Social “la Caixa”, is now available in Spanish, Catalan e English and at www.ambientech.org.
