The European Parliament hosts a conference to promote diabetes research in Europe

On Wednesday 16 November the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) organized a round table in the European Parliament to discuss about the future of research on the disease in the European Union. The event was part of World Diabetes Day, celebrated on November 14th, and was hosted by the Catalan Member of the European Parliament Ernest Maragall. At the event attended Anna Novials, team leader of Pathogenesis and prevention of diabetes IDIBAPS and member of the EASD-EU committee, which works to positively influence the decisions of Parliament European funding on R & D in diabetes in Europe.

Joel Montané is awarded with the Jose Antonio Hedo Prize from the Spanish Society of Diabetes

The Foundation of the Spanish Diabetes Society has awarded the Jose Antonio Hedo Prize on young basic research to Dr. Joel Montané, reasearcher at the the Pathogenesis and Prevention of Diabetes IDIBAPS group, for his scientific career in the field of diabetes. This group, which belongs to the Diabetes and Associated Metabolic Diseases (CIBERDEM) from CIBER, is led by Dr. Anna Novials and aims to generate new knowledge about the mechanisms of pathogenesis, prevention and treatment of diabetes.

IDIBAPS held the first Forum of Diabetes and Sports

On October 1st, about forty patients with type 1 diabetes participated in the First Forum of Diabetes and Sports, organized by the Unit of Diabetes and Exercise at IDIBAPS, under the direction of Dr. Anna Novials.

IDIBAPS celebrates the second course on innovation and diabetes within the AstraZeneca Chair

The Institute of Biomedical Research August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS) hosted on 13 and 14 March the second training course of the AstraZeneca Chair in Diabetes Innovation. With the main objective of conveying the interest and value of research to understand, prevent and cure diabetes and its complications, this second course has mainly been focused on three issues: the benefits of exercise in people with diabetes; the use of nanovaccines in the field of autoimmune diseases and diabetes; and new prototypes of artificial mini-pancreas.

The IDIBAPS organized a course to promote translational research in Diabetes

The IDIBAPS hosted last week the course “Introduction to Research in Diabetes Mellitus“, organized by the Spanish Diabetes Society (EDS) and sponsored by Lilly, designed to promote awareness and interest about translational research  in diabetes in senior residents and specialists in endocrinology. The course was organized by Dr. Anna Novials, who leads the IDIBAPS group Molecular and Metabolic Alterations in Diabetes and is the vice-president at the EDS, and consisted in theorical and practical classes about recent advances in biomedicine, metabolic study of patients and the basis of genetics and epigenetics of diabetes.

IDIBAPS starts at the Urgell Civic Centre a cycle of scientific popular presentations entitled “In the pursuit of health”

Dr. Anna Novials opened the science dissemination cycle “The search for health“, developed by the IDIBAPS and the Urgell Civic Center. The talk was titled “My sugar is high. What can I do, Doctor? How and why should we control diabetes“. During her presentation, Dr. Novials, researcher and specialist in diabetes, provided tips to manage diabetes and a basic overview of the latest developments in science and technology in this disease. There was an intense interaction with the public, and both the speaker and the attendants were satisfied with the experience. The cycle includes presentations by top-level researchers from IDIBAPS for the following months.
