Four biomedical research centres in Barcelona join forces to bridge the gap between investigation and clinical practice
The Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG), the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS), and the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR)—the two last institutes linked to the Clínic Hospital and Vall d’Hebron Hospital, both university training hospitals in Barcelona—have designed a training programme called “PhD for Medical Doctors – PhD4MD”. This is a pioneering initiative seeking to speed up the transfer of results generated by biomedical research activities in Spain to clinical practice—a process commonly known as translational medicine.
The Institute of Biomedical Research August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS) hosted on 13 and 14 March the second training course of the AstraZeneca Chair in Diabetes Innovation. With the main objective of conveying the interest and value of research to understand, prevent and cure diabetes and its complications, this second course has mainly been focused on three issues: the benefits of exercise in people with diabetes; the use of nanovaccines in the field of autoimmune diseases and diabetes; and new prototypes of artificial mini-pancreas.
The IDIBAPS hosted last week the course “Introduction to Research in Diabetes Mellitus“, organized by the Spanish Diabetes Society (EDS) and sponsored by Lilly, designed to promote awareness and interest about translational research in diabetes in senior residents and specialists in endocrinology. The course was organized by Dr. Anna Novials, who leads the IDIBAPS group Molecular and Metabolic Alterations in Diabetes and is the vice-president at the EDS, and consisted in theorical and practical classes about recent advances in biomedicine, metabolic study of patients and the basis of genetics and epigenetics of diabetes.
The Institute of Biomedical Research August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS) held on 23 and 24 October the first training course of the AstraZeneca Chair in Diabetes Innovation entitled “Innovation and diabetes: new strategies for implementation of research into clinical practice“. It was addressed to specialists and primary care physicians, and its main objective was to convey the interest and research value to understand, prevent and cure diabetes and its complications. Another aspect discussed in this course was innovation in communication to achieve a change in patient’s attitude towards the disease. This course was led by Dr. Ramon Gomis, Director of IDIBAPS, and Dr. Daniel Figuerola, from the Rossend Carrasco and Formiguera Foundation has collaborated together with other clinical experts and researchers in the field of type 2 diabetes from IDIBAPS and Hospital Clinic.
