IDIBAPS hosts the meeting of the HEP-CAR european project on hepatocarcinoma and co-morbidities

On 13 March, IDIBAPS hosted the annual meeting of the European HEP-CAR consortium. The aim of the project is to identify the molecular mechanisms involved in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and their role in the different co-morbidities that induce the onset of this type of cancer: the infection by hepatitis B and C viruses, alcohol intake or obesity. Translational Reserarch in Hepatic Oncology IDIBAPS group, led by Dr. Josep M. Llovet, in collaboration with Dr. Roser Pinyol and 8 more researchers, participates in this research intiative.

The IDIBAPS participates in BIO-Europe Spring

The Barcelona International Convention Center hosted from 20-22 March the BIO-Europe Spring conference. This is the most important partnering congress in Europe for the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry. Attendees had 3 days to hold 30-minute private meetings with other international managers and business developers, from other institutions and companies around the world.

An International study proves that Huntington’s disease alters neurons since they start developing

 

Huntington’s disease could alter neurons since they start developing, according to a study conducted by the international HD iPSC Consortium, which counts with the participation of the team of the Laboratory of Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine of the Department of Biomedicine of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the UB, led by Josep M. Canals, from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona and the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS). The study, published in the scientific journal Nature Neuroscience, counts with the collaboration of the experts of the UB Mónica Pardo, Gerardo García, Marco Straccia, Phil Sanders and Jordi Alberch. IDIBAPS and IRB Barcelona researchers create viruses to selectively attack tumor cells

Scientists at the IDIBAPS Biomedical Research Institute and at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) lead a study in which they have designed a new strategy to get genetically modified viruses to selectively attack tumor cells without affecting  healthy tissues. The study, published today by the journal Nature Communications, is part of Eneko Villanueva’s work for his PhD and it is co-lead by Cristina Fillat, head of the Gene Therapy and Cancer Group at IDIBAPS, and Raúl Méndez, ICREA researcher at IRB Barcelona. The European project LifeBrain will analyze the keys of cognitive ageing with data from more than 6.000 people

The European project LifeBrain has been set up this year. This is a project funded with ten million euros by the European Union program Horizon 2020, and which will last five years, aiming to identify risk and protective factors in the brain and mental health during different life stages. The project counts with the participation of fourteen research groups from different European countries –mainly Scandinavian- coordinated by the University of Oslo. The only group representing southern Europe is led by David Bartrés Faz, researcher from the Institute of Neurosciences of the University of Barcelona and IDIBAPS and coordinator of the Barcelona Brain Stimulaiton Lab (BBSLab).
