Hospital Clínic introduces a less invasive therapy for heart failure patients

Hospital Clínic of Barcelona has been the first hospital in Spain in using the novel surgical procedure known as Less Invasive Ventricular Enhancement (LIVE). This therapy consists in reducing the size of the left ventricle –the main pumping chamber of the heart- after a heart failure in a less invasive way, thanks to the REVIVENT myocardial anchoring system. Dr. Manuel Castellà, chief of Cardiac Surgery at the Hospital Clinic and Dr. Daniel Pereda, heart surgeon at the same service, used this innovative procedure with two patients who achieved a better clinical outcome with an enhanced quality of life.

Hospital Clínic and Astellas Pharma promote training in liver transplantation

In the third edition of the Fellowship in Liver Transplant Surgery, Astellas Pharma has exclusively chosen the Liver Surgery and Transplantation Unit at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona to train a specialist in this field. This year, Dr. Rocío García Pérez, a specialist in General and Digestive Surgery, has been awarded with the fellowship. Dr. Pérez started her formation on May 15th at the department led by Dr. Juan Carlos García-Valdecasas.

Type 2 diabetic patients are better controlled with insulin pumps

Efficacy results from the comparison between the use of insulin pumps and multiple injections (OpT2mise trial) could define how this treatment can help in the management of insulin-requiring Type 2 Diabetes. Data obtained after six months show that patients who used the pump therapy safely achieved better glucose control, with 20% less insulin and without significant differences in weight gain.

Dr. Jordi Bruix received the prestigious Golden Award Medal of the Canadian Association for the Study of the Liver

Dr. Jordi Bruix , Hepatology Senior Consultant, Head of Oncology Liver Unit of Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Head of Hepatic Oncology team at August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS)  and Deputy Scientific  at Networked Biomedical Research Center Hepatic and Digestive Diseases (CIBEREHD), received last February 9 the prestigious Golden Medal Award from the Canadian Association for the Study of the Liver, granted recognition for significant contributions to advances in the field of hepatology, especially liver cancer. Dr. Bruix received this award in the context of the Canadian Digestive Disease Week held in Toronto, where he gave his lecture Hepatocellular carcinoma. Past, present and future.

IDIBAPS – Hospital Clínic investigators lead an international consensus about the use of antidepressants in bipolar disorder

The International Society for Bipolar Disorders (ISBD) recently presented an international consensus on the use of antidepressants in bipolar disorder. The article, published by The American Journal of Psychiatry, the most read general psychiatry journal and with a higher impact factor, has Dr. Isabella Pacchiarotti as its first author and Dr. Eduard Vieta as the last one, both from the IDIBAPS – Hospital Clínic Bipolar Disorders group. Shortly after its publication, the article was selected by the American Psychiatric Association among the 3 most important works of the year. Dr. Eduard Vieta will present it at the annual meeting of this Association, a conference with over 20,000 participants to be held in May 2014 in New York.

Experts from Hospital Clínic – IDIBAPS and Bayer discuss with journalists and patients about a rare pulmonary hypertension

Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is a rare, progressive and life-threatening disease. The Hospital Clínic of Barcelona is a reference center in Spain for the treatment of this disease. Dr. Joan Albert Barberà, from the Pneumology Service, Dr. Marta Burrel, from the Radiology Service, and the surgeons Dr. José Luis Pomar and Dr. Manuel Castellà, offered a deep insight into the disease in an event held at the IDIBAPS’ CEK building. Two patients explained their first hand experience after undergoing a complex operation called pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA). Dr. Hossein-A. Ghofrani and Dr. Johannes-Peter Stasch presented new therapeutic options for inoperable patients developed by Bayer Pharma AG. The results discussed today were presented during the European Respiratory Society (ERS) Congress taking place in Barcelona.
