An International consensus states that patients no longer need to fast before a cholesterol testing

New research from Denmark, Canada and the US involving more than 300,000 individuals suggests that patients do not need to check their cholesterol levels on an empty stomach. From this study, 21 World medical experts from Europe, Australia and the US, among them, Dr. Emili Ros, researcher at Hospital Clínic, IDIBAPS and CIBERobn, sign a joint consensus statement. The European Heart Journal publishes these recommendations.

Hospital Clinic performs the first robotic kidney transplantation with implantation of the graft through the vagina

Hospital Clinic of Barcelona performed pioneer worldwide kidney transplantation by implanting the kidney transvaginally in the recipient. This is a minimally-invasive surgical technique in which the donor organ is removed vaginally and then introduced into the recipient through the same channel. A team led by Dr. Antonio Alcaraz, Chief of the Urology Department at Hospital Clinic, performed this pioneering operation last October using robotic surgery with the da Vinci Xi robot.

Almost 1,000 patients with epilepsy or movement disorders resistant to drugs have been operated at Hospital Clínic

Hospital Clinic of Barcelona celebrates in 2015 the creation, 20 years ago, of the Functional Neurosurgery Program, the first of its kind to be implemented in a public hospital in Catalonia. Dr. Jordi Rumià, the coordinator of this program, together with the Coordinators of the Epilepsy and Movement Disorders Units at the Hospital, launched this program. Since then, about 1,000 patients have benefited from this surgery.

An initial combined treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension provides better long-term results

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) shows that the combination of two drugs (ambrisentan and tadalafil) is more effective than the use of one of these agents to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension. The combination therapy improves very significantly the outcome of patients with this disease and reduces by 50% the risk of clinical failure. Dr. Joan Albert Barberà, pulmonologist at Hospital Clínic and head of the IDIBAPS team Physiopathological mechanisms of respiratory illnesses is one of the authors of this study and coordinator of the trial in Spain.

Hospital Clinic will coordinate the validation of an european ‘app’ to better monitor HIV patients

Researchers from the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona participate in the development and subsequent validation of an application for mobile devices that will facilitate monitoring of HIV patients and the doctor-patient communication. In the European project EmERGE, Hospital Clinic will validate the use of a mHealth platform in a study with 4,000 patients across Europe, 1.000 of whom will be participants of this center. The project, launched last May 6th and coordinated by the University of Sussex (UK), is part of Horizon 2020, the European Comission framework programme for research and innovation, it is endowed with a budget of 6 million euros and includes the participation of several European institutions.

Hospital Clínic participates in a European project for the prevention and treatment of atrial fibrillation

On May 21st the European consortium CATCH ME (Characterizing Atrial fibrillation by Translating into STI Health Causes Modifiers in the Elderly) was launched at the office of the European Society of Cardiology in Brussels. The aim of this project is to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of patients with atrial fibrillation and its complications. Dr. Lluís Mont, coordinator of Atrial Fibrillation Unit of the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, participates in this project, coordinated by the University of Birmingham (UK). Horizon 2020, which is the largest EU research and innovation programme, supports the consortium with a 5 Mio Euro grant over the consortium’s duration of 4 years.
