Josep Dalmau, Chair of the new Autoimmune Neurology Section in the American Academy of Neurology

Dr. Josep Dalmau

Dr. Josep Dalmau, ICREA Professor of IDIBAPS, where he leads the Group Pathogenesis of autoimmune neuronal disorders, and consultant of the Neurology Department of Hospital Clínic, has been named Chair of the Autoimmune Neurology Section in the American Academy of Neurology (AAN). It is a newly created section that wants to differentiate itself from the classic concept of neuroimmunology, more linked to other types of diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis. The founders of the section are Drs. Sean Pittock, of the Mayo Clinic, and Jeffrey Gelfand, of the University of California San Francisco (UCSF).

The aim of the Section of Autoimmune Neurology, which will start working after the annual AAN meeting in April, is to give visibility and coordinate activities within the academic framework of the Academy on these diseases; to create scholarships for the training of young specialists; and create a consolidate interest group to help other colleagues through inter-consultations or serve to direct patients to specialists in the field.

There is a growing interest in this subject at an international level and the American Academy wants to give a boost to the specialty. The creation of this section is a recognition of this field of neurology and it is the result of the work and effort of all of us“, explains Dr. Josep Dalmau, who is also a Professor of Neurology and founder of the Penn Center for Autoimmune Neurology in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. This recognition was highlighted with the creation, three years ago, of Neurology: Neuroimmunology & Neuroinflammation, an official journal of the AAN focused on this subject with Dr. Dalmau as the Editor.
